ezday, the fact that you are asking "what about" implies that you may allow it in certain instances. If that is the case, allowing Safeguard to go over your books and day to day ops may be a win win for you. They'll allow you to stay on with them and you won't have to pay a consultant to improve your business model.
If you feel you have to let certain people behind the counter, then about all you can do is get mad.

You could inform said companies that their pay stub itemizations aren't jiving up with your open invoices, and you'd like to drop by their suite and supervise their accounting department for the day; maybe try and match your receivables up at the same time. Tell the head of HR to make herself available if you have questions. I'll be glad to post a sticky listing all companies willing to do so.

I've been through it a couple of times with a few different companies. It was no big deal for us, but it killed some of our less qualified competition.

I find it a little disturbing that companies with questionable business practices of their own are somehow experts on how you should run your business. Unless there is more transparency on their end, I have no intention of opening up my paperwork to anyone. That's more of the inmates running the asylum than good business sense.
