Had an FAS recruiter tell me once $20 per cyd was good money. He also fancied himself a preservation coach. Enjoyed telling contractors everything he knew about bleach, kilz, how to tarp a gable, how to write a bid, etc. The guy said he wouldn't be too proud to work for that rate. It was more than a fair deal.
I said "Good for you then. I'm hiring this week and I'll be happy to put you on for FAS rates minus discount." I'd bring that up everytime he would call.
Had a safeguard QC expert lecture me on housekeeping at a house that was later bulldozed. Dust on the top of the water heater, cobwebs in the cellar floor joists, beer tabs under the porch, etc. I mentioned what I paid my lead maintenance man and his eyes widened. "I'd work for that if I didn't live so far away." I told him if I hired him the first job I'd give him would be the QC job at the house we were at.
When I passed 35 I became an sob. Kind of like, if I'm going to get the speeding ticket anyway, I'll get my monies worth.
I remember a home builder/developer telling me once, "How is it a guy working as a building inspector making 30k a year can command and control a job site run by a guy making 10 x that?"
