Chicago Zone 11
I've been in the preservation business about 2½ years now and just recently got into my own thing. I do mostly recuts, shrub and tree trimming, and ICC checks for MCS.
I do everything solo with manual tools to cut down on expense as much as possible (plus a trimming job done by hand looks better). I operate Chicago's Zone 11 which is the south and Southwest suburbs. I give trashouts to other crews -- I don't like the overhead. I've seen too many times the client cut a cube count in half for no reason. I've also seen the cost of truck rental and paying your employees, and after MCS takes their 23-25% , you're left with almost nothing. If there's more than 10 cubes, I won't take it.
I've been on many jobs with squatters and crack heads living in them, but I've also seen a few times people renting out foreclosed house they don't own! They copy the key and pop the LB off and charge them $2500 a month to live there until someone from this industry comes by to check on it. By then the scammer would've skipped town.
Anyways my intro got outta hand. To sum it up, I do my own thing solo with manual tools and a sedan as a work truck in zone 11 Chicago.
