Walker Mower

Spring has sprung in the northern Rockies of Montana - I know this because not only has the ski resort closed for the season (after a record 407 inches of snowfall!), but the grass is starting to grow in my back yard. Time to get the mower out, and. . .

The starter isn't working in my 550 hour, 2011 26HP Walker GHS mower. Looking around the engine, I finally spot the starter tucked way down low, stuffed in an impossible spot next to the blower assembly - absolutely no way to get to it. Headed off to the Walker dealer for starter price & advice: Starter - $200, Labor to R&R the engine and starter - $200! Are you kidding me??

Back home I go to exercise my mechanic skills. A few belts, plugs, bolts and snipped zip-ties later I have the engine shoe-horned out and hanging on the hoist and the starter removed. With the part # off the old starter I head to the internet & end up ordering a starter for $49/shipped.

$49 And a couple of hours worth of work by the time it's all done vs. $400 at the dealer - easy money! Hope my clients don't read this post & find out I have an extra $350 in my pocket!

Was an ASE master mechanic for 15 years. Burned out and tired of wearing hands that looked like pork chops.
Got into preservation and landscaping and soon grew tired of dropping decks, swapping belts in the middle of a pasture and tearing up equipment every summer.
Now I'm into tractors. 75hp and under. Simple to work on, easy to access and those diesels will live long enough to bury you with minimal maintenance. Plus they'll do everything I used to do with a shovel, a rake, a mower, a posthole digger, a tiller and a plow much quicker and with hardly any effort.
